Explore the colony by day

Come along during the day for an exploration of the Discovery Centre and a stroll through the penguin colony. Learn about the lives of little penguins, then head out to the penguins’ nesting area – where you may even spot the odd nesting penguin or two.

What to expect

Take your time exploring the Discovery Centre – an interactive exhibition space packed with everything you need to know about our work and the little penguins. Then, head out to the penguin colony to walk among the nesting boxes and spot penguins in the viewing room. The penguins like to stay hidden in their nests during the day when they're not at sea fishing, but we have some specially designed nest boxes for you to see into.

Penguin viewing room

During the day, little penguins are either out in the ocean fishing or tucked away in their nests. They are rarely seen out and about on land.

Our specially designed viewing room gives you a unique peek inside nesting boxes to see the penguins at home without disturbing them. Keep in mind, these penguins are completely wild and free to come and go as they please. From August to February, you’re likely to spot penguins incubating eggs, raising chicks, or moulting. Outside of the breeding season, sightings can’t be guaranteed.

Before you visit, check this page to see how many penguins are in the viewing room.
