Green Globe

At the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony we take our responsibility to the environment very seriously. We have aligned ourselves with Green Globe to be accountable for what we put into the environment and the resources we use.

Green Globe is an internationally recognised environmental ecotourism standard. There are categories and standards for different sectors of the industry and levels that recognise the depth of commitment a business makes. We are currently very successfully benchmarked being above best practice in 5/6 of the categories which includes:

• We have a sustainability policy and it is in place
• Water consumption
• Waste sent to landfill/waste recycled
• Energy consumption
• Contribution to conservation
• Community commitment — no staff living in 10km of work
• Vehicle management
• Paper products are as far as possible all recyclable, have recycled contents or are unbleached
• Cleaning products are all environmentally sound
• Pesticide products are bio-degradable and/or organic.

Next year we will achieve certified status. This means that we are able to maintain a significantly high standard of sustainable practice and have that practice audited.
